How the mulch estimate works
We add the area of each rectangular bed, multiply by your chosen depth, and add the extra percentage you entered. We then round up to whole bags or your supplier's bulk increment. Prices come from the numbers you enter, so you can compare actual local options.
THE CORE FORMULAArea (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = volume (ft³)Then add your extra allowance. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
A quick example
Two beds measure 12 × 6 ft and 8 × 4 ft. Together, that's 104 ft². At 3 in deep, they need 26 ft³ before extra. With 10% extra, that's 28.6 ft³, or about 1.06 yd³. For 2 ft³ bags, round up to 15 bags. If a supplier sells bulk in half-yard increments, order 1.5 yd³.
What can change the final amount?
Curved bed edges, slopes, settling, the actual volume of a bag, and how your supplier measures a bulk load can all affect what arrives on site. This is a purchasing estimate, not a guaranteed yield.
