Compare the purchase, not just the unit price

A bag is sold as a whole package. Bulk mulch may be sold in half-yard or whole-yard increments, sometimes with a minimum and a delivery fee. These rules can make the amount you pay for larger than the exact volume your beds need.

A sample comparison

Suppose your beds need 28.6 ft³ after your chosen extra allowance. That is 15 two-cubic-foot bags or a 1.5 yd³ bulk order when the supplier sells half yards. At $4.50 per bag, bags cost $67.50. At $38 per yard plus $35 delivery, bulk costs $92.00. In this example, bags cost $24.50 less. Your local prices may reverse the result.

When bags may be easier

  • You are covering a small area or working in stages.
  • You can transport bags yourself and store extras neatly.
  • A bulk delivery minimum is much more than you need.

When bulk may be easier

  • You have a larger area and a place for the load to be dropped.
  • You would otherwise need many store trips or a lot of packaging.
  • Your supplier's delivered price is competitive for the orderable amount.
